Highlights

  • **Exploring Lake Toba: An Insider’s Guide to the Best Activities**
  • It’s not hard to find things to do around Lake Toba. Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, you’ll find something that suits your mood (and yes, you can actually float your boat here!).
  • The challenge for most travelers is finding enough time to truly explore the area. If you have a few weeks, you can wander at your own pace and uncover all the hidden gems. But most of us only have a few days, so making the most of your limited time becomes a priority.
  • Thankfully, we’ve had the luxury of spending weeks (or even months!) soaking up the local Batak culture around Lake Toba over the past five years. During that time, we've discovered our favorite activities, spots to eat, and must-see sights. Here’s our insider’s guide to the best things to do in Lake Toba:
  • 1. Live Music at Roy’s Pub
  • Our top recommendation? Head over to Roy’s Pub on Samosir Island. This rustic, unpretentious venue is a beloved local icon and the perfect place to spend an evening with friends. Roy’s Pub hosts live music every Friday and Saturday night. On Fridays, you’ll enjoy more relaxed acoustic or local music, while Saturday nights are all about dancing to a mix of international hits from the likes of Bruno Mars and Metallica, as well as local tunes and blues.
  • The in-house band, Jajabi Band, keeps the crowd entertained, and if you’re feeling bold, you can even get up on stage yourself! Even if you're not around on music nights, you can always enjoy a coffee at Roy’s Coffee —a cute spot out front, open during the day.
  • Whether you’re visiting solo or with friends, Roy’s Pub offers a friendly, safe environment—perfect for all kinds of travelers.
  • 2. Strolling Through Tuktuk Village
  • Although Tuktuk Village is often considered the tourist hub of Lake Toba, it’s still a peaceful and charming place to wander around, especially on non-holiday weekdays. Explore the quiet streets, greet the village dogs and cats, grab a coffee or juice, and chat with the locals. The picturesque atmosphere and beautiful flowers make it an ideal place to relax and soak in the vibes.
  • There’s no shortage of great restaurants and pizza spots in Tuktuk. Jenny’s Restaurant** is a standout, offering fantastic pizza (and real cheese, unlike in many parts of Sumatra) and a menu filled with delicious seafood and local specialties. Don’t forget to try the cocktails if you’re in the mood!
  • 3. Sampling Tuak (Palm Wine)
  • A unique local experience involves tasting tuak, a traditional palm wine made from the sap of palm trees, which is a popular drink in the region. Around 5 p.m., you’ll notice local men (and sometimes women) gathering at small tuak bars, which become vibrant social hubs until late in the evening. While it’s not essential for tourists to join in, if you’re invited, it’s a great way to connect with the local community and enjoy some traditional Batak songs.
  • Tuak can be an acquired taste, so if you decide to try it, start slow—especially if you’re not a regular drinker! It’s typically served in plastic bags, which is standard here.
  • 4. Scenic Views at Reggae Guesthouse
  • For some of the best views of Lake Toba, head to the balcony at Reggae Guesthouse in Tuktuk. This place offers panoramic views of the lake, with a bay framed by colorful bougainvillea blooms. The view at sunset is particularly stunning, so grab a beer, relax, and take in the serenity.
  • The guesthouse itself is peaceful and a perfect place to unwind. The rooms have equally beautiful views, and the area offers a tranquil atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of more touristy spots. If you’re a fan of tofu, don’t miss the **tofu sambal**—it’s a must-try dish!
  • 5. Explore the Beauty of the Surrounding Mountains
  • If you’re up for a scenic adventure, head to the mountains around Lake Toba. Take the road from Tomok village, which is dotted with lush rice fields, pine forests, and traditional Batak architecture. Along the way, you’ll pass **buffaloes lounging in mud baths** and can stop at various **viewpoints** for stunning vistas of the lake below.
  • One of the coolest places you’ll discover is Danau Aek Natonang, a beautiful lake located on an island within the lake on an island. The scenery is breathtaking, and it’s an ideal spot for some quiet contemplation or a few memorable photos.
  • **Pro Tip**: It can get chilly up in the mountains, so make sure to bring a light jacket or sarong, and always have a raincoat handy, just in case!
  • ---
  • Whether you’re looking for a fun night out, some peaceful moments by the lake, or a taste of local culture, Lake Toba offers something for every traveler. With so much to explore and enjoy, you’ll want to make the most of every moment in this stunning region of Sumatra.
