Jomblang Cave Adventure: Vertical Descent, Ancient Forest & the ‘Light of Heaven’ in Yogyakarta

Located in the Gunung Kidul Regency of Yogyakarta, Jomblang Cave is a massive vertical collapse doline formed thousands of years ago. It has become one of Indonesia’s most iconic natural wonders, famous for its unique ecosystem and breathtaking lighting effects.

Key Highlights

• The Vertical Descent: Unlike traditional horizontal caves, Jomblang requires a 60-meter rappelling descent (using Single Rope Technique) to reach the cave floor.

• The Ancient Forest: At the bottom of the sinkhole lies a lush, prehistoric-style jungle. Because this area was isolated from the surface for centuries, the flora here differs significantly from the vegetation at the top.

• Grubug Cave & The “Light of Heaven”: A 300-meter tunnel connects Jomblang to Grubug Cave. Here, between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM, sunlight streams through a hole in the roof, creating a magnificent pillar of light known as the “Ray of Light” or the Light of Heaven.

• The Underground River: Visitors can hear and see a rushing underground river at the base of Grubug Cave, which eventually flows out to the Indian Ocean.
