Explore Sad Kahyangan Jagad Sanctuaries – Goa Lawah Klungkung Tour

In this tour, we will explore one of the Sad Kahyangan Jagad or Six Sanctuaries of the world according to Balinese culture. Beside the well-known Mother Temple Besakih, there are other significant temples like Lempuyangan, Uluwatu, Luhur Batukaru, and the one we will visit on this tour, Goa Lawah Temple. Our journey begins with a visit to Kertha Gosa Pavilion, renowned for its unique architecture, particularly the ancient Klungkung signature style. Kertha Gosa, also known as the Court of Justice, was established in the 17th century by the king of Klungkung. This historical building, surrounded by water, features ceilings painted in the Kamasan style, depicting life and Hindu religious scriptures, offering insights into Klungkung and Balinese culture. Before that, we will stop by the Klungkung monument, erected to commemorate the bravery of Balinese warriors during puputan, a struggle to the death against invaders. Here, miniatures depict Klungkung’s history from the kingdom to independence periods. Following this, we will visit a nearby traditional market. Next, we will head to Kusamba, known as the only place in Bali where traditional salt making is still practiced from start to finish. Kusamba’s serene atmosphere, rarely visited by tourists, makes it a unique and worthwhile stop. Lastly, we will visit Goa Lawah Temple, one of Bali’s most sacred sites, built by the early Balinese priest Empu Kuturan in the 11th century. We will continue to the largest football stadium in Bali and the second-largest in Indonesia, where we will enjoy lunch with a view of the field. Finally, we will conclude our tour at a historical cliff temple in Tegalinggah village, traditionally used by Balinese holy men for meditation, located along a river in the Gianyar area.

Bali: Discover The Culturally Secluded Bali Aga Villages of Trunyan

We will begin our tour by visiting the largest temple, Mother Temple Besakih, also known as one of Bali’s Six Sanctuaries according to Balinese tradition. Besakih is a sprawling complex consisting of 23 separate yet interconnected temples. It holds the distinction of being the first temple ever built in Bali and the primary site of the Six Sanctuaries. Situated on the slopes of Mount Agung, Bali’s highest mountain, Besakih was established by Bali’s first priest in the 8th century and has been a place of continuous Hindu worship since 1284. By the 15th century, Besakih became the state temple of the influential Gelgel Dynasty. Following our visit to Besakih, we will explore one of the Bali Aga villages, namely Trunyan. Originally an uninhabited island, Bali began to see settlement from the 8th century, marked by the establishment of Besakih Temple. The priest who founded Besakih and his followers have maintained their distinct identity amidst subsequent waves of Javanese migration in the 11th, 15th, and 17th centuries. Known as the Bali Aga or Balinese mountain people, these ancient residents reside in tranquil villages like Trunyan near Lake Batur, where they uphold unique customs such as leaving the deceased lying on the ground instead of burying them. Next, we will visit a coffee plantation, observing the process from harvesting Arabica and Robusta coffee seeds to grinding them into fine powder for your enjoyment of coffee and tea. Finally, we will conclude our tour with lunch overlooking the picturesque rice terraces of Tegalalang. Afterward, we will return you to your original departure point.
